As part of my work with Create Growth N2, I interviewed Richard Scott, founder of Monitor of Things, for a case study to uncover the story behind his off-grid tech startup – a business born from one freezing night in a camper van.
Richard told me how that cold, powerless evening planted the seed for a smarter way to manage energy off-grid. With the support of his network, former colleagues, and the CGN2 programme, he turned that frustrating experience into a bold new venture.
Together with a team of fellow engineers, Richard launched Monitor of Things, a company driven by a shared passion for off-grid living. Their first product, BatMon, is a smart battery and power monitoring system designed to help people stay warm, connected, and in control – whether they’re in a camper van, a yacht, or a remote cabin.
This case study was shaped through a one-on-one interview, where I crafted the narrative to spotlight the human spark behind the innovation, the impact of local Nottingham business support, and the real-world value of the product.
